Iris Rosa, a Habitat Homeowner, wrote this moving letter to the Daily Hampshire Gazette in response to their recent article about the generous match donation:

"I’m writing in reference to the Northampton couple pledge $30,000 to match Habitat for Humanity donations.  First I would like to thank Jack Hornor and his husband, Ron Skinn for donating and placing this challenge.  My name is Iris Rosa I would like share my story as a Habitat for Humanity Home Owner of 4 Garfield Avenue.  I am a full time mother of 6; 4 of my children live with me.  I moved to Florence MA from Brooklyn NY about 7yrs ago looking for a better life for my children and myself.  I have not once regretted this change.  Although it has been a journey it’s an experience that will live with my children and me for a life time.  I had heard about Habitat for Humanity by a co-worker who believed I would be a great candidate. I had only been a resident for about a year and just was not quite ready.  When I felt grounded I finally applied.  I received the phone call of approval on my son’s birthday and was just about finished with the day.  I remember it as if it were yesterday, just yelling to my children “we got it! We got the house!” and my kids jumping and yelling YAY!  That day was definitely the icing on our cake.  Building our home, being part of the process as it grew and become more real was amazing.  Sweat Equity indeed; from hammering, plastering, measuring and painting we not only watch our home become a reality but were part of a community of people who gave with out a thought to help us build our dream.  I have had people tell me “hey now you have assets and/or you have a home to pass down to your children and grandchildren.”  I see it as so much more. My home has a story with chapters that will be never ending.  My children and I, we are part of making a dream together.  We are grateful to have experienced the growth of our home.  So, to you both Jack Hornor and your husband Ron Skinn, to past and future donors, to the dedicated volunteers who give their time, on behalf of my children and me, Thank You for helping to make our dream come a reality."

Vehicle Donations

Do you have an older car, truck, van, trailer, RV or boat taking up valuable space in your yard? Car donations support Habitat for Humanity’s local and global mission of eliminating poverty housing and homelessness and save you the time and energy of finding a buyer. By donating a car to our vehicle donation program, you can help Pioneer Valley Habitat for Humanity build houses in partnership with families in need of a hand up, not a hand out.

It is quick and easy to donate automobiles, trucks, boats, RV’s, motorcycles, construction equipment and other vehicles—running or not! Plus, you may be eligible for a tax deduction. (Consult your tax advisor or the IRS for details.)
